Sprouts are the perfect salad and a easy way to start gardening, keep gardening during winter, or get kids involved in gardening.
All you need is a jar, cloth, rubber band, and some seeds.
grow salad garden indoors sprouts
The best seeds for this are mung beans, peas, kale, radish, broccoli, cabbage, spinach and mustard greens.
Plant the seeds in the jar and cover with water. Discard the lid, and replace with a cloth and rubber band. After 24 hours, drain the jar through the cloth, refill with water and drain again. Store your jar upside down so any excess water can drain. Keep it out of direct sunlight.
Drain, rinse and rinse again twice a day to prevent the growth of mould or bacteria, and keep your seeds moist.
After 5 - 7 days you will have a jar full of sprouts ready to start a salad, top off a soup or garnish any meal.
They do not store well, so eat when they have sprouted. They will last about 2 - 3 days.
1. Their growth rate will depend on the temperature of your house.
2. Keep them out of direct sunlight so they don't dry out.
3. If they aren't very green, then you can put them on a windowsill for a few hours for direct light. They will green up nicely. BUT make sure they don't dry out.
